Appendix: Character Codes

ASCII codes are used in UNIX and DOS-based computers to represent plain text. IBM System 390 computers use their own set of codes, called EBCDIC.

Windows has an app, Character Map, which lets you see the Unicode and keystrokes for ASCII code for each character in a particular font. If you know the keystrokes, you can use the keystrokes without having to open Character Map.

A new standard, called Unicode (Unicode Worldwide Character Standard), is understood by modern operating systems and browsers. Unicode version 6.2 contains over 110,00 characters from 100 scripts used to write the languages from all over the world. In addition to letters and numbers, Unicode includes punctuation, mathematical and technical symbols, geometric shapes, dingbats, and Braille patterns. Unicode contains the standard ASCII codes as a subset.

Tables below show the ASCII and EBCDIC code sets. The symbol open rectangle symbol means that the current font does not contain the symbol. For example 0128 has recently been changed to Euro symbol, the new Euro currency symbol, but older fonts will not have that symbol. For images of the complete tables, see www.asciitable.com

To see the glyphs for Unicode you need to go to the Unicode site: Unicode 2.1 charts. There are some scripts there that are very different from what you see on this page!
