You need to use what you just learned, and maybe learn a little more. Complete all parts of the following exercises. Don't forget to backup your Class disk when you have completed the exercises or whenever you stop for the day and saved a document along the way.

These exercises use files from the Project 2. Save the changed documents to your Class disk in the excel project3 folder. This keeps the original files intact in case you need to start over or another student will be using this same computer.

Exercise Excel 3-1:

Theater Tickets -
AutoFormat; Insert; Totals

What you will do: AutoFormat tables
Adjust formatting
Insert rows
Create totals and subtotals
Repair formulas

Start with: Class disk, theater tickets2.xls (saved in previous exercise)

The worksheet you created in Exercise 2-1 at the end of Excel Project 2 was quite bare. Should we say boring? Some formatting would add interest and would make the chart easier to read.

  1. From your Class disk, open the file theater tickets.xls from the excel project2 folder.

  2. Class disk Save to your Class disk in the excel project3 folder with the name  theater tickets3.xls
TipWhen you plan to save with a different name, use Save As right away so you won't overwrite the original file by mistake.

  3. AutoFormat all: Select all the data, A1:F36. AutoFormat the selection with Classic 3 table format, applying all the characteristics.

  4. Edit: In cell B5, edit the text to read Number. In cell C5 type Price. Below C5 enter the prices of the ticket types: $20, $16, $8.

  5. AutoFormat small table: AutoFormat the Seating Capacity table, A4:C8, with Classic 3 also.

  6. Format small table: Center Seating Capacity across the 3 columns of the small table. Center contents in each cell of the rest of this small table. Select the cells surrounding the small table and clear all formatting in them.

  7. Format large table: Wrap text in cells containing West Side Story and Ticket Type. Widen the columns as needed and resize rows to be just tall enough to show the text. Center the Ticket Type column.

  8. Insert rows & format: You need some space for subtotals. Insert blank rows above the rows containing Dolly, Evita, Totals. Border the new cells in the large table with Button: Borders, one line top, double line bottom.

  9. AutoSum subtotals: Use AutoSum to create subtotals for each play of the tickets sold and the total money for those tickets. [Look at the range Excel suggests carefully and change it if necessary.] Make these 3 new rows Bold. In column A of these rows type in the name of the play followed by Total =. Make the new labels in column A Bold Italics.

  10. Rewrite Formulas: Inserting the subtotals made the Total row values wrong. The formulas changed to include the new cells. Rewrite the Totals on the last row so the formulas will add only the subtotal cells in that column.

  11. Prepare to print: Change the header to show Exercise Excel 3-1. Spell Check. Check the Print Preview - portrait orientation, centered horizontally on page. Compare carefully to the illustration below. Make any corrections needed in alignment, formatting, spacing, etc.

  12. Save Save  [theater tickets3.xls]

  13. Print Print the sheet.
