Change, change, always more change!

There are more and more things you can customize about the way your browser behaves. Everyone is different and likes to work in a different way. It can make web browsing a happier experience if you can make changes to suit yourself.

For example, Internet Explorer offers to complete URLs in the Address Bar for you. But you can turn this AutoComplete feature off if it annoys you. That is, you can if you remember where the setting is!

Some people are just hate music playing in the background. Disable it!

People with a slow connection have to wait forever for images to load. Turn them off!

Let's get educated as to what in some of the other Options dialog tabs.

What you will learn:

to change the window size

For your browser to look like the pictures in these lessons, you need to verify certain settings in the browser.

 Icon: IE6The command  Internet Options...  has been moved in IE5/6 to the  Tools  menu. The directions will combine these as  View / Tools , the first being what is true for IE and the second for IE5/6.

Start with: IE Open (Internet Explorer open)

  1. If necessary, open the Internet Options dialog:  View/Tools  |  Internet Options... 

Programs settings

Dialog- Interent Options - Programs

  1. Click on the tab Programs.
     
  2. Verify the following settings:

    Mail: Outlook Express

    News: Outlook Express

    Contact list: Address Book

    (Other settings here will not affect your work in the lessons.)

    These choices affect what happens when you use certain toolbar buttons and menu commands.
     

  3. Open the drop lists for each program type to see if there are other choices.

    Later, if you want Internet Explorer to open a different program, you can choose it from the list. If your favorite software is not on the list, you will have to open it yourself.

  1. Click on the tab Advanced. Scroll through the list of settings and read them all. So many choices!

    If you are curious about a setting, click the Dialog Help button button at the top right and then click the setting you are interested in. A popup tip will give an explanation.

    There are too many choices to discuss each one. We will take the easy way out.
    Warning You are about to change the way Internet Explorer works. If this is not your computer, you run a grave risk of making the regular users mad! Make a list of the settings so you can restore them and avoid creating a problem for the computer's regular users. Good manners, again!
     

  2. Click the button Restore Defaults.
     
  3. Click the button OK to accept your changes and close the dialog.

Window Size

  1. If you are using a resolution of 640 x 480, maximize the IE window. If you are working in a larger size, you do not have to maximize the window. A size that is about 640 x 480 will let your window look like the text illustrations.
  2. Click on Button-Home the Home button to load the new home page. This page contains links to material also found in the resource files, which you will use to practice navigating web pages. There are also links to real sites to show the kinds of places and the types of information you can find on the Internet. In a later project you will create a Home page yourself.
