In MLA format at the end of your report you must include a Works Cited page that lists the references you used.

The MLA Guidelines have specific rules for what information to include in the citation for any type of reference - a book, a magazine article, an encyclopedia article, a web site, a personal interview, etc. These can get confusing when you throw in works that have several authors or are part of a series or are in one of the new electronic formats.

Basically the rules boil down to giving the information someone would need to find the exact resource you used. That would normally mean the author's full name, the complete name of the resource, the publication date, and who published it. For online resources you need to include the complete URL (web address).

The text that you will type for this exercise will include a variety of resources. Most of the resources were found online but you may not be able to access them now. Many sites rotate their articles and do not keep online archives of past issues.

Step-by-Step: Works Cited page

 Icon Step-by-Step

What you will learn:

to add a page at the end
to format references on a Works Cited page

Start with: Class disk Icon- Word with blank document , report-worldtravelinc2.doc from the previous lesson

Create Works Cited Page

  1. If necessary, add a blank line at the end of all the text.

  2. End of page with page breakInsert a Page Break after the blank line using CTRL + ENTER.

  3. Press ENTER to insert a blank line.

  4. Type  Works Cited  and apply Heading 1 to it.

  5. Center the line.

Formatting applied after a page break affects the previous page if there is no blank line.Icon: TroubleFormatting after page break shows on previous page: You did not create enough blank lines.

If there is no blank line above Works Cited, the last line on the previous page will also have this style. Since the style applies a black shading, there would be a complete black line or a small black rectangle on the page. Unexpected effect!! This is an example of how the formatting at a break applies to material before the break.

Minimize Line Space

  1. Text - Works Cited titleSelect the top blank line and change the font size to 1 pt.

  2. Open the Paragraph dialog and set the before and after line spacing to 0 and the line spacing to single. (This will minimize the amount of space the blank line will take up on the page.)

Create Style - works cited

  1. Type the first citation as shown below. Be careful with the punctuation.

    Text - First citation
(Your typing will not wrap like this!)

In the URL there is an underscore between edit1 and 980706.html. It is hidden by the hyperlink formatting. If Word is set to format web addresses as hyperlinks ( Tools  |  Autocorrect… |  Autoformat as you type  |  Internet and networks paths with hyperlinks ), the URL will turn blue and be underlined once you finish typing it and go on to the next line.

  2. Format this first citation with the Paragraph dialog as:
       Alignment: Justified
Left and right indention = 0
       Special = hanging by 0.5 "
Space before and after = 0
       Line spacing = Double.

  3. Create a new style by selecting this paragraph and typing in the Style box  works cited .

  4. Put your cursor at the end of the citation and press ENTER to create a new paragraph. It inherits the works cited style. Neat!

  5. Continue carefully typing the remaining citations and apply the  works cited  style to them, if they do not inherit it automatically.

Icon: TroubleWords too far apart: Justification can put in too much space. Change the alignment to Align Left.

Tip Since citing sources on the web is new, older manuals of style won't show you how to cite them. Recently updated manuals might allow you to omit the "http://" part since browsers no longer require you to type that in. The web address should be all together, with no extra hyphens. The capitalization must be exactly the same as the original or the URL might not work. If your document will be read on a computer, having the URL formatted as a hyperlink lets the reader click on it to visit the site. If your report is just going to be printed, it would be better not to have the links in blue since the blue color will be paler when printed in black and white.

Icon: TroubleCannot edit hyperlink: When the cursor is over a hyperlink, it has the shape of Pointer shape - hand a hand rather than the normal cursor normal editing cursor. Clicking will make Word try to access the URL and open the page there. To edit the link, you must place the cursor in regular text nearby and use the arrow keys to move it inside the hyperlink text. Then you can edit normally.
