Jan's Working with Windows 10:

    Folders: Select

Before you can do anything with a folder or group of folders, you first must be able to select what you want. For a single item, it is just a matter of clicking on it in the Contents pane. For more than one item, you have a choice of techniques, depending on whether the items are next to each other (adjacent) or not (non-adjacent).

Select & Move Multiple Folders: Drag

There are several ways to select multiple folders. The marquee select method used here is particularly useful when the icons for your files and folders are next to each other.

  1. Drag to select (Win10) Left click Click in a blank spot below and right of the farthest item in the window showing the contents of the my docs folder on your removable drive and Icon-left drag  drag.
A box called the marquee appears as you drag. (Pronounced Pronunciation of 'marquee'. It's French.)

You can only select in one direction at a time. If you reverse your direction, you deselect.

  2. Keep dragging until the box covers enough of the icons for all of the remaining folders to become highlighted, which shows that they are selected.

Your marquee box does not have to completely enclose the icons. But just touching is not quite enough. In the illustration look at the icons for course info and reports. The selection box includes only about part of the name of the box, yet the whole icon shows as selected.

  3. Now release the mouse button.
This method is called marquee select.
  4. Drag two folders (Win10)

Icon-left drag Drag on any of the selected folders and drop in the class window.

    All selected folders are dragged!

The dragged icon shows the number of objects you are dragging. This is very helpful when you are moving or copying a large number of items.

Select in Contents Pane

  1. File Explorer window showing contents of USB drive (Win10)In the Navigation pane, Left click click on the name of your removable drive to select it.
The name is highlighted and the Contents pane shows what is on the drive.
  2. If necessary, change the view of your Class drive to Details view.
  3. File Explorer: my docs folder selected in Details view (Win10)Left click In the right pane, click on the folder name my docs to select it.
The name is highlighted and the Class drive has a gray highlight instead of blue in the folder tree.
  4. Computer window showing USB drive open to my docs folder (Win10)Expand folder tree: Left click Click the arrow beside the removable drive in the left pane.
The folder tree expands to show the folders on the drive. The drive now has the blue highlight to show it is the active selection.

The folder my docs in the right pane is still selected but the highlight is gray for 'inactive'.

Select Adjacent Folders: SHIFT key

  1. Computer window showing 3 selected folders (Win10) If necessary, in the left pane, Left click click on the folder class to select it.
The right pane now shows the three folders that you created.
  2. Left click Click on the folder excel docs in the Contents pane to select it.
  3. Hold the SHIFT key down and Left click click on the folder word docs.
All folders in between are selected.

This method doesn't work on the folder tree!

Warning Difference in views: The technique will also work other views, but what is considered to be "between" depends on what view is in use. Remember that some views list items going across the pane and some list going down the pane. You can have an unhappy surprise if you don't notice which view you are using when you select.

  4. Left click Click in a blank spot in the right pane to deselect the folders.

Icon: Keyboard Alternate method: Only keys
Once the focus is in the Contents pane, use the arrow keys to move to the folder that is first or last in the set of adjacent folders you want to select. Hold the SHIFT key down while using the arrow keys to move to the other end of the sequence. All items in between are selected.

Select Adjacent Folders: Drag

  1. File Explorer window showing a marquee selection in progress (Win10a)Icon-left drag Drag from a blank spot in the right pane below the folders until the marquee select has highlighted the same folders (from excel docs to word docs) in the pane. Release the mouse button.
    All folders between are selected.

Select/Deselect Folders- Not Adjacent: CTRL keyNon-adjacent folders selected (Win10)

  1. With the folders selected from the previous step, hold the CTRL key down and Left click click on the folder term papers and move the pointer off the icon.
The folder term papers is no longer selected but the other folders remain selected.

Using the CTRL key selects or deselects files and folders one at a time. You can use this method to select items that are not next to each other (non-adjacent). Again, this doesn't work on the folder tree. It works in the Contents pane.

  2. Deselect: Non-adjacent folders selected (Win10)Left click Click in a blank area of the window to deselect all folders.
  3. Left click Click on the folder excel docs, hold the CTRL key down, and Left click click on the folder word docs.
Once again two folders are selected which are non-adjacent.
  4. Icon: Experiment Experiment: Selecting in different views
Apply different views and experiment with selecting a number of adjacent and non-adjacent items. Can you anticipate which items will be selected when SHIFT is held down?
